PLC and operator panels form the logic, timing, and data-processing layer of a machine. ABB's modular CPU and expansion module structure allows the digital and analog input/output requirement to be met by adding units as the project grows. Operator panels are used for monitoring process values, entering parameters, and tracking alarms. Since common industrial communication protocols are supported, they can operate on the same network as drives and field devices.

AC motor drives provide speed and torque control by changing the voltage and frequency applied to the motor. ABB's general-purpose and industrial drive series are used in applications requiring variable or constant torque such as pumps, fans, conveyors, mixers, and centrifuges. Since input/output connections and common fieldbus protocols come ready on the drive, the need for additional hardware inside the panel is reduced. Ramped starting and stopping limit sudden loading on the mechanical components and the grid.

Servo drives and motors are used on axes where position and speed are continuously monitored with feedback; the accuracy of settling to the target position is at a level that cannot be met with asynchronous drives. They are preferred in applications requiring repeatable positioning such as cutting, feeding, labeling, and packaging machines. ABB's compact servo drives are offered with different Ethernet-based communication options, and axis management is configured together with the motion control structure on the controller side.

DC drives provide speed and torque control of direct current motors. Since they allow renewing only the control side without replacing the motor in the modernization of existing DC-motor facilities, they continue to be used in installed plants such as winding-unwinding units, extrusion, and rolling mill lines. ABB's DC drive modules have a modular structure; in addition to motor applications, they are also suitable for non-motor rectifier needs and include the Safe Torque Off function as standard.
